Since I published the ‘2013 Leading eCommerce Platforms For The Top 100 Online Retailers’ post, I have received many requests to conduct similar research albeit focused on European online retailers. The results of that research are provided below.
1. 58% of the Top 100 European eRetailers built their eCommerce platforms internally
While only 41% of the IR Top 100 Online Retailers built their eCommerce platforms internally, significantly more European eRetailers chose to do the same.
2. There is no monopoly amongst eCommerce platforms used by the Top 100 European eRetailers
While IBM WebSphere is the most popular eCommerce platform among the largest online retailers in Europe (i.e. 9% of the Top 100 European eRetailers), there are other platforms that are not far behind and could challenge IBM’s leadership in the market during the next couple of years. For instance, Hybris is used by 8% of the Top 100 European eRetailers, Oracle Commerce by 6%, Intershop by 4% and Venda by 3%.
Below are some examples of the European websites using 3 of the most popular eCommerce platforms:
IBM WebSphere: Mark&Spencer, Privalia, Debenham
Hybris: Nespresso, Zooplus, Conrad
Oracle Commerce: bol.com, Chain Reaction Cycles, John Lewis
Read ‘Hybris vs WebSphere vs ATG vs Intershop vs Venda vs Magento Clients from the IR Top 500 European eRetailers’ to see more examples.
Among the other eCommerce platforms used by the leading European eRetailers are Demandware, Magento, Itim, Jagged Peak, Pixmania, Invobe and Shopware.
Other interesting findings:
Some well-known online retailers switched (planning to switch) to other eCommerce platforms.
Otto builds its own eCommerce platform (http://www.otto.com/en/newsroom/dossiers/lhotse_en.php)
MEXX shut down its online store (http://www.mexx.com/en/page/online-shop)
Monsoon started using Hybris in 2011 (http://www.retailtechnology.co.uk/news/3181/e-commerce-deal-takes-monsoon-accessorize-global/)
Dick’s Sporting Goods is planning to build its own eCommerce platform by 2017 (http://www.internetretailer.com/2013/09/25/dicks-sporting-goods-swings-web-sales-fences)
Many large European online retailers use multiple eCommerce platforms for different websites.
Disclaimer: I did my best to provide the most current and accurate information in this post via analyzing such information about the Top 100 eRetailers published on the Web. However, up-to-date information about some retailers’ eCommerce platforms was not always available. As a result, while stats provided in this post are based on the most current information available online, there is a chance that some retailers switched to another platform without making an announcement as such. If you find it to be the case, please let me know and I will be happy to make the necessary changes.
